  8. Bless you, bless you, bless you, bless you (can I repeat that?) I am a bass also, found this by accident today, have no recording of the Messiah, but do have the score in hand. Been years since I did the whole thing, am auditioning in two weeks (hope it's just a 'voice placement') to be in the 'amateur' (or 'audience') 'sing-along' chorus here in Germany (apparently, that's how they do 'Messiah sing-alongs' here...). It's a total joy to find this site and all of your Messiah work on it, today. Thanks so much!

  10. hi friend
thks for your work. I wish have known your parts before, I'm a lower bass and your parts are very useful for us. Your latin is quite good, I'm italian and I can tell it, so never mind. Just two little facts: the "t" for an englishman sounds like a "tch" but in italian (and latin) it isn't so; the second is very difficult for you: the sound "gn" (like in "agnus dei") isn't "g - n" but letters are joined in a strange sound (for instance, go to google translater and listen the pronounce of "agnello" (lamb) in italian.
    Thanks a lot again.

So, The Shepherds' Farewell is not a problem except that it's so low ... but I've had a go - http://youtu.be/GAnj6uq0ym8 ... I've sung the alternate notes (I don't sing bottom E.)

John Rutter however - I'd have to get copyright permission to have a go at those. I'm not sure how to go about doing that. Perhaps I should explore it! But, sorry, I don't think I can do those without his permission!

  26. Thanks for your response - frustrating indeed. A great piece but the three (or is it four?) language middle section is hard for amateurs! You would think that modern composers would be pleased that people are buying their music and attempting to sing it. This is coaching, not piracy! I'm very sorry, but I'm pretty sure that setting of 'Most Glorious Lord of Life' is still in copyright, so I don't think I'm allowed to put it up on youTube. Most of the time it's in copyright for 70 years after the composer's death. Annoying, as I'm sure he wouldn't mind!

    1. Thank you so much for your comment and your very generous offer! I've been creating videos for a couple of years now and the wonderful responses and requests I receive have been absolutely fantastic! I actually work as a musician, playing the piano for ballet and musicals, so this is more of a hobby for me - although, I should come clean and say that I do actually receive some money for my work, through google's advertising service (we're talking about 50p a day or so.) However, if you really do feel able, I'd be happy to have inspired a small donation to http://www.mind.org.uk/

I've uploaded Silent night ... although there are lots of different arrangements, so I'm not sure if you'll find it helpful. 45. I started singing bass when my voice changed--about 50 years ago. I love to sing parts in congregational hymns, but I've never sung in a choir. Recently our church's minister of music asked if I'd be willing to join the choir in singing "How Lovely Is Thy Dwelling Place" from Brahms' Requiem. I wanted to, but it was really intimidating! Fortunately, someone pointed me to your YouTube post of it. We sang it today, and it went very well, but I know that I could not have prepared for it without this. Thanks so much! Next stop: "And the Glory of the Lord" from Messiah!

Sounds like you've been thrown in at the deep end! I'm sure the rest of the choir appreciate having a hard working bass on board. Good luck with Messiah - I think it's easier to memorise than the Brahms.

I used a public domain score for Faure's Requiem, from imslp. It doesn't say who the publisher is on it.

    2. The regular choir takes a break for the summer. The summer choir sings only twice during the summer: once in early July and once in early August. The idea is to give newcomers a taste of what it's like to sing in the choir, and maybe get some people interested in joining the regular choir.

    3. Here's the bass part to Be still my soul ... thanks for the suggestion. Yes, I've started doing something similar called "community choir" where newcomers sing with the choir, it's been a success. Very hard for people to commit long term though, understandably.

  73. Hi there, just wondering what hymn book you use for the music and words. Here in Llanbadarn, near Aberystwyth we use Anglican Hymns Old and New.Your Baselines have been very useful to me for almost 2 months now. Occasionally we have hymns that are not in your list. Today it is 'Tis Good Lord to be Here'(Carlisle) and 'My God how Wonderful You are' (Westminster). Is it possible to make requests for these ? The same tune is covered by other hymns sometimes but it would be great to have the right words ! Many thanks for the time and effort you have put into compiling these very useful recitals.

    1. Hi - I mainly use 'Complete Anglican Hymns Old and New' ... there are lots of editions. This one is bright orange and was first published in 2000. My God how Wonderful You are is in there, but I can't see Tis Good Lord to be here in my book I'm afraid. Yes, the same tune is covered by other hymns sometimes - I haven't done many duplicates! Carlisle is also "Breathe on me breath of God" which I've done a video for. I've not done the tune Westminster though - I will do it! Thanks for pointing it out!

No problem! I'm about to start having a few fridays free to do a bit of work at home, so will divide it between the basshymn videos and a few other projects I think! Thanks for getting in touch!
